Product Design - Circular Economy

Designed and made by the ocean

This project tackles the current operating system and supply chain of oysters as it modifies the process towards a more circular economy in Brighton. Working with shell waste from local restaurants, the design challenge is the disruption of oysters going to landfill through meaningful and purposeful design. Being a great source of Calcium Carbonate (CaCO3) an ingredient whose mining accounts for 8% of global emissions for making cement and concrete. Oyster shells are combined with alginate found in seaweed to create beautiful, recyclable and biodegradable lamps and plates for local restaurants.
